Kashif & Shanghai Football Tournament |
|
The K&S Football Tournament is a major attraction to bring visitors to Linden. As such it presents one of our cornerstones for the development of event tourism in the Region. It dates back to 1989 when the first tournament was played – exclusively with teams from Linden. During the 90s the tournaments grew into a national and later even an international event with an increasing number of foreign teams participating.
When a K&S tournament is on, the whole City of Linden is in a “state of emergency” with parties going on everywhere, traders and showmen from Georgetown, and a lot of other activities mainly around the Mackenzie Sports Club. Traditionally, the final is played in Linden on the New Year’s Day in the late evening. |

The History of Kashif & Shanghai Football Tournament |
|
The Idea of the Kashif and Shanghai football competition came about in 1989 as Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey "Shanghai" Major were witnessing a Boxing Day boxing card in Georgetown. At the time, Lindeners had no major sporting event to look forward to during the Christmas holidays. Kashif, who at the time was associated with the “Milerock Football Club”, got together with "Shanghai" who was with the Eagles United Football Club to organise a match between the two teams. After further discussion, it was agreed to include two other teams from the Linden town, “Botofago” and “Central Hikers Football Club”. This was the first Kashif and Shanghai football competition. In the final on New Year's Day “Milerock” beat “Eagles”, 2-1.Troy Mendonca was adjudged MVP of this tournament. This tournament was sponsored by Banks DIH limited to the tune of G$4,000. |

The annual Fish Festival began in September of 2006 in the small fishing village “Rockstone” located on the western bank of the Essequibo River (The country's longest river, it rises in the Serra Acaraí, near the southern frontier with Brazil, and flows north for 1,010 km (630 mi) to the Atlantic Ocean, near Georgetown, where it forms a wide estuary), this event attracts approximately 1200 visitors both local and oversees; with just a few attraction available. The following year there was a great improvement in both visitors and events, the visitors attendance raised tremendously with many fishing enthusiast entering the fishing competitions. This runs within a 2 kilometers length of the Essequibo River with the centre attraction being Rockstone. Amateur fishing was done on the bank of the river and nearby creek. |
